About Us
Our History…
WonderWomen started in the fall of 2008, born from a shared challenge: a group of female physicians striving to find balance while navigating work, motherhood, and life after residency. By 2010, we morphed into the first-ever “Women’s Section” of the Forsyth County Medical Society in Winston-Salem, NC. Over the first six years, we welcomed women physicians from both local community and tertiary hospitals, coming together several times a year for book clubs, lectures, and spirited discussion groups. Through these gatherings, we built a supportive community where women could learn and connect. I can vividly remember a small gathering at “Lucky 32” (RIP this old restaurant) where we discussed that we all felt we were doing everything at about 60% - jobs, work, as spouses and mothers, etc - that 60% was all we could give. Just this realization changed everything for me and normalized the madness of life as a working mother.
In the fall of 2016, we expanded our group to include other professional women, engaged community members, and interested female residents, PAs, and medical students. The expansion to include others has rounded us out so beautifully. We have dedicated nights to challenging topics such as diversity and inclusion, sexual harassment and assault, misogyny, gender disparities in the workplace, #MeToo, the fallout and emotional impact of COVID, sexuality, women’s health, and issues of work/life balance that affect all working women. We have discussed an array of books including The Anxious Generation, Let Them, Fighting for Our Friendships, Sandpaper Moments, Mating in Captivity, The Emotionally Exhausted Woman, Dear Madam President, Thrive, Untrue, Overwhelmed, Notorious RBG, Lean In, The Power of Off, Shrill, and many books related to the Enneagram, and others. For seventeen years and counting, this remarkable group of women never fails to lift, support, and inspire one another.
